The Bariatric Clinic

Hi, I am Eileen Wright, M.D., a physician at The Bariatric Clinic in Asheville, North Carolina. As a physician I am aware of all the reasons for curbing obesity. However, much of the information I share is gleaned from living life as a person who has a life-long relationship with obesity; I was literally overweight at birth, so when I say lifelong, it’s true. Although I now have eating habits and a lifestyle that supports maintaining my desired body weight, I never lose track of my history and the knowledge that I easily gain weight if I am not mindful of what I eat and how much I move.

Both losing weight and maintaining that loss have many things in common and the first is COMMITMENT! I can attest to the fact that maintaining a healthy weight is harder than losing weight to begin with . . . just because it is a FOREVER commitment.

This commitment is to yourself and needs to reflect the motivation behind your desire to lose weight.

This motivation varies from person to person.

Your motivation may stem from a desire to feel better, to look better, to improve control of or prevent diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, heart attack, stroke and certain cancers. It may stem from a desire to wear a certain size clothes or to have a longer functional lifespan. It may be several of these desires together. Whatever your motivation I suggest defining and owning that motivation, reinforcing it in your own mind daily (or several times/day) and loving yourself enough to reach your personal goal.

This doesn’t mean you can’t have days or even weeks where your motivation wavers and you lose commitment (sometimes life does get in the way!) but it does mean noticing when that happens and looking deep inside yourself for that original desire so you can get back on track. After all, if it was easy, no one would be overweight.
